Newcastle United vow not to repeat 'mistake' with Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon

Newcastle were involved in the biggest transfer saga of last summer with Alexander Isak eventually completing a move to Liverpool.

Newcastle United do not want to repeat ‘mistakes’ from the Alexander Isak transfer saga when it comes to interest in their players this summer. Both Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon are expected to attract attention in the transfer window.

It was a similar situation with Isak 12 months ago, with Liverpool showing an interest. That only intensified as the window opened, with Newcastle turning down bids for the striker.

However, in an attempt to push through a move, Isak didn’t play in the opening games of the season before releasing a statement on social media. The striker eventually got his wish by completing a £125 million move to Anfield on deadline day.

Sky Sports reports that Newcastle have made a ‘private acceptance’ over the mistakes made in the Isak transfer saga. It is believed that the situation has affected the current season, with the club sitting in 12th place in the Premier League.

Given the expected interest in Tonali, the Magpies are expected to show that they have learned lessons. It is insisted that no player will be sold for less than their value, meaning that interested clubs will still have to pay big.

It’s added that ‘ideally’, the club plan to keep all of their best players and have no desire to cash in on any in the upcoming window.

Tonali has already been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United. The midfielder is contracted to Newcastle until 2028, with scope for an improved deal.

However, his agent Giuseppe Riso has suggested that Newcastle are seen as a stepping stone to elsewhere. Speaking about a possible exit from St James' Park, he said: “Exactly, that was the goal from the moment he went to England – to try to make him a star player.

"I think he’s the Italian footballer with one of the highest values in the world."

There have also been various reports about the future of winger Gordon. The England international has been linked with Liverpool for the last few windows, with Arsenal and Manchester United also said to be showing an interest.

But when questioned about the rumours back in February, Gordon gave a clear answer. "It's the same old, same old,” he said.

“I think they just pick names out of a hat. They do (names out of the hat). I haven't heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you (the media)."

When asked if he wants to focus on staying at Newcastle and becoming a legend, he said: "Of course. I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish."
