Marco Reus wants‘old’ version of Man Utd loanee back, but that player might have disappeared forever – opinion

Marco Reus has stepped in and provided the all-important advice for former Borussia Dortmund teammate Jadon Sancho — but is it too little too late for the Manchester United flop?

Jadon Sancho is out of contract with Manchester United in the summer and the 26-year-old Red Devils winger is linked with a permanent exit from Old Trafford.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund ace has almost become a forgotten United first-team player at the Red Devils, having spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Aston Villa.

Just as Sancho’s lacklustre Aston Villa spell continues to creep closer to its end in June, Marco Reus has reacted to the situation involving the on-loan United winger.

Marco Reus wants Jadon Sancho to have a third spell with Borussia Dortmund once he makes his exit from Man Utd

Jadon Sancho has managed 31 appearances for Aston Villa, but the former Three Lions star has netted only once and registered three assists for his side.

The Manchester United player arrived at Villa Park on deadline day in 2025 and the move to the Premier League club already felt like a key lifeline for him.

However, Sky Sports in Germany has reported that Sancho has ‘held talks’ with Borussia Dortmund over a potential return once he becomes a free agent.

Sancho is believed to be ready to take a pay cut and Marco Reus, who played alongside him twice during the United winger’s two spells at Dortmund, is all for it.

“My primary advice to Jadon is to look for a place where he feels comfortable again and can rediscover his game,” Reus told Bild, as per the Metro.

“And if that’s at Dortmund, then it would be good for both him and Dortmund.”

Here’s a look at how the table currently stands… where will United finish?

A third Jadon Sancho spell at Borussia Dortmund feels like a sign of desperation for a player who is no longer desired

United thought they had finally offloaded Sancho at the end of the 2024-25 campaign after Chelsea had an obligation to buy the former Dortmund ace.

However, Chelsea were wise enough not to sign Sancho after his average loan spell and instead incurred a penalty fine and shipped the winger back to Old Trafford.

A third spell at Dortmund is not a ‘reward’ for Sancho amid picking up the pieces of his football career — it feels like the only real option for him on the table.

The United winger would still be desired by clubs elsewhere in the world, but Europe’s top teams are not scrambling for Sancho after his Old Trafford struggles.

Reus said that he had “rarely played with a player who instinctively” made the ‘right’ decisions in “tight situations” on the pitch as former teammate Sancho once did.

Unfortunately for the LA Galaxy player, the Sancho that he is talking about is a distant memory from the one who lit up the world at Dortmund in his first spell.
