Short memories at loaned club: Man Utd attacker’s dig ignores 11 months his former manager shielded him – opinion

Rasmus Hojlund might be flying on cloud nine at Napoli under Antonio Conte, but the Manchester United striker has done the biggest disservice of all to Erik ten Hag.

The 23-year-old Danish forward is in a strong position to have his major differences with Ruben Amorim in the post-Erik ten Hag era of the Premier League club.

After all, former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim essentially ‘turned his back’ on Rasmus Hojlund before the ex-Red Devils striker’s loan exit in 2025.

However, Hojlund’s latest praise for Napoli, manager Antonio Conte and all other parts of the Serie A club overlook what ex-Red Devils boss Ten Hag did for him.

Rasmus Hojlund’s Man Utd swipe says a lot about his forgotten time under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford

Speaking to Danish TV outlet TV 2, Rasmus Hojlund pulled no punches towards parent team Manchester United, Ruben Amorim and any other part of the club.

“I got what I wanted with my transfer,” he said, as per the Metro.

“I got a team that believes in me a lot. A club that believes in me a lot. A sporting director, a president and a coach who wants me.”

Man Utd star Hojlund seems all but certain to leave Old Trafford in the summer after spending the 2025-26 campaign on loan at defending Serie A champions Napoli.

Napoli will have to pay the Red Devils a permanent £38m transfer fee in 2026 if certain conditions are met, including securing a return to the Champions League.

Hojlund’s remarks come amid his solid run of form on his return to Italy, with the Denmark international netting 14 times in 37 matches for Napoli this season.

Before becoming the transformed striker as he has done, the United star’s lacklustre debut season at Old Trafford was where Erik ten Hag came to his rescue when he needed it.

Man Utd fans know exactly what Erik ten Hag did for Rasmus Hojlund — and the Napoli striker shouldn’t forget it either

Amid Hojlund’s appreciation for all things Napoli, the Danish attacker thankfully fell short of saying the Naples-based supporters believed in him more than United fans.

Hojlund had no easy challenge on his hands after the Red Devils agreed a hefty £72m deal to sign him from Serie A outfit Atalanta during Ten Hag’s United reign.

The former Atalanta man did have early success at Man Utd in the 2023-24 season after he netted five times in six Champions League matches for the Red Devils.

However, Hojlund’s form in the Premier League was diabolical at one stage, with the Danish forward experiencing a 14-match goalscoring drought under Ten Hag.

Ten Hag kept faith with Hojlund during the highs and lows, including during his Premier League goalscoring struggles and rich vein of form in early 2024.

Hojlund might want to poke his head out of the clouds on cloud nine and take a closer look at the faith that Ten Hag put behind him time after time at United.
