Shola Shoretire undergoes surgery as he confirms his promising season in Netherlands is over

Shola Shoretire was enjoying his season on loan in the Eredivisie before it ended prematurely following an injury that required knee surgery.

It’s an unfortunate reality that there are no guarantees for a young player in Manchester United’s academy to graduate as a first-team player.

Although Shola Shoretire is among the youngest to do so at just 17, he didn’t get the chance to become a regular in the first team despite being awarded the coveted Jimmy Murphy Award in 2022 after impressing in the academy.

After leaving United on a free transfer to sign for PAOK in 2024, he made 28 appearances and scored just four goals. This season, he was sent on loan to Eredivisie outfit PEC Zwolle.

Shola Shoretire undergoes knee surgery

Former United playmaker Shoretire says he has had a successful knee operation on his season-ending knee injury.

The 22-year-old will miss the rest of the Eredivisie campaign after he got injured before being sidelined for PEC Zwolle’s match against NAC Breda, having played 85 minutes against FC Groningen.

It was initially feared as a serious injury, which now appears to be the case, with Shoretire announcing that he will miss the rest of the season.

Shoretire wrote the following message to his followers on Instagram, along with a picture of him post-operation: “Very successful surgery after a knee injury that brings my season to an early end.

“You know what they say, minor setback… I’ll be back soon and continuing where I left off. For now, a new journey and challenge.

“Looking forward to making steps of progress and already dreaming of that return to the pitch. Stay tuned.”

This is a huge blow for PEC Zwolle because he had six goals in 27 appearances for the Dutch club.

PEC Zwolle are currently sitting 12th in the Eredivisie table.

Which manager gave Shola Shoretire his first professional contract at Man Utd?

In February 2021, Shoretire signed his first professional contract at United.

The manager at the time was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who felt there was something special about the youngster.

Erik ten Hag would later decide to let Shoretire leave the club for free.

Ineos may now feel that Shoretire is a player they would’ve been able to have done a better deal with.
