Man Utd now keen to sign "world-class" 27yo star, £61m deal could be agreed

Manchester United have entered the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero amid interest from Atletico Madrid, according to Spanish outlet Marca.

The Argentine was linked with a move to Atletico last summer, but a deal did not materialise. Romero ended up signing a new long-term contract with Spurs until June 2029.

Despite this, his future remains in the balance. Tottenham value their centre-back at around £61 million, but there is a special £52m clause for Atletico and Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side are prepared to make a fresh approach this summer, but they face a ‘major problem’ with Man Utd having now joined the pursuit of the 27-year-old.

Man Utd should pursue a deal for Van de Ven instead

Romero has been a key player for Spurs, but his discipline has been a genuine cause for concern. He has picked up eight yellow cards and two red cards in the league this term. Overall, he has been sent off six times in his Spurs career.

The Argentine, described as ‘world-class‘ by teammate Micky van de Ven, has also been guilty of making defensive errors this season. He has made five errors leading to shots, conceding one goal.

Romero will turn 28 next month and may not have much room for improvement. Keeping that in mind, United should pursue a deal for Van de Ven instead. The Dutchman will be 25 in April.

The Red Devils are yearning for a quality left-footed centre-back to compete with Lisandro Martinez, who has been injury-prone. Van de Ven would be a solid addition to the club’s ranks.

The Dutchman has also had a tough campaign with Spurs, but he is better with the ball at his feet than his Tottenham teammate (89 percent passing to 87) and has shown better discipline (seven yellow cards & one red card).

Van de Ven can also operate as a left-back when required. His versatility would make him a better recruit.

Spurs may value him at a similar price as Romero, but United could land his signature for a knockdown price this summer if the north London giants fail to avoid Premier League relegation.
