Liverpool are reportedly collaborating closely with Arne Slot to pinpoint summer transfer targets, despite mounting doubts over the Dutch coach's long-term prospects at the club.

Slot had a fairytale first campaign at Anfield, steering the Reds to Premier League glory at his maiden attempt. This season, though, has proved far more demanding.

Liverpool are now battling to secure Champions League qualification after dropping out of the title chase, and missing out could mean curtains for Slot. The reigning champions sit fifth, five points behind fourth-place Aston Villa, after recently losing to Brighton & Hove Albion and drawing with Tottenham Hotspur.

Nevertheless, the Daily Mail reports that Slot's position is not presently under threat. The club are said to be 'narrowing down lengthy lists of summer transfer targets' and 'approaching' agents, work done in 'consultation' with Slot.

That said, situations can change rapidly, and his role could be at risk if Liverpool miss out on Champions League qualification. Doubts have already emerged during the season, and Slot is fully aware that failing to secure qualification for the competition could prove damaging.

He recently addressed whether that matter might sway the board's thinking. He said: "That is a difficult question for me to answer because I don't decide on my future.

"The only thing I do know is that it happened before and recently, and it didn't affect the future of that manager, but that doesn't guarantee anything, of course. In general, managers, especially at this club - maybe somewhere else - it is not only about results.

"Mainly, but not only. At some clubs, they also look at the progress the players make, the progress the team makes, and the circumstances are sometimes taken into account."

"That is not at all clubs. But I think I am working at a club that does look at those things, as it has shown in the past, when the club did not qualify for the Champions League."

Xabi Alonso applauds

The Reds' former midfielder, Xabi Alonso, has repeatedly emerged as a candidate amid the mounting pressure on Slot. The Spaniard has been without a role since departing Real Madrid in January, where he spent eight months in charge.

A return to Anfield could be on the cards, though this time Alonso would take control from the touchline. The Mail indicate there is an increasing belief within the industry that Alonso is 'available' this summer, but clubs risk losing out if they don't act swiftly.

Nevertheless, Slot is receiving support 'for now at least'. Though the club's bosses will be acutely aware that Alonso is likely to secure a role elsewhere in the coming months.
