Crystal Palace could see a £39m bid accepted to sign a big upgrade on Strand Larsen - opinion

It's likely to be a chaotic summer for Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, as Oliver Glasner heads for the exit door and questions undoubtedly emerge about the future of a number of key players.

Palace already proved in the January transfer window that they're prepared to spend big when needed, however, and could do the same in the summer transfer window.

Whether that spells trouble for January arrival Jorgen Strand Larsen is the big question. After struggling to settle into life in South London so far, a replacement could already be on the way.

Palace searching for Strand Larsen rival

When Strand Larsen scored his third goal in five league games against Tottenham Hotspur, it very much looked as though Palace had spent £48m wisely.

Since then, though, scoring against Spurs has looked more routine by the week and the Norwegian has not added to his tally.

With Mateta back to full fitness, there's every chance that Strand Larsen loses his place before he's even had the opportunity to make it his own. It would instantly raise questions about Palace's spending and the forward's ability to replace the Frenchman in the long-term.

On paper, three goals in ten games isn't exactly a disastrous record, but there will be more expected from a £48m striker once he settles in to life at Crystal Palace.

Should Strand Larsen fail to find his golden touch in South London, he could find himself replaced as quickly as he arrives - especially under a new manager.

Recent rumours suggest that Palace are willing to welcome another striker, too. Indeed, according to Sports Boom, Crystal Palace are looking at a move to sign Jonathan Burkardt from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer.

They claim that while Leeds and the Eagles are monitoring the player's situation, Frankfurt value the player at around £39m, and could accept bids in that region if any interest materialises.

How Burkardt compares to Strand Larsen

It's easy to see why Palace are plotting a move to sign Burkardt this summer. The Frankfurt forward has enjoyed an excellent campaign and is at the peak of his powers at 25 years old.

Whilst Strand Larsen endured a season to forget at Wolverhampton Wanderers before failing to hit the ground running at Palace, Burkardt has been in clinical form, not just bagging 19 times last season but firmly hitting the ground running in 2025/26 too.

25/26 League Stats Burkardt Strand Larsen

Minutes 982 1,874

Goals 9 4

Assists 0 1

XG 8.05 4.16

Shots on target P90 1.37 0.58

The Bundesliga star has outperformed Strand Larsen in every metric. Crucially, he has outscored the Norwegian in almost 1000 fewer minutes and outperformed his xG by around a goal.

It's also important to point out that Burkardt tends to be involved more, taking almost one more shot than the Palace man per game. In a new era under a new manager, the last thing that the Eagles need is for their striker to be a passenger.

0.82 goals per game is quite the record for a player who could cost £39m this summer. If Burkardt brought that form to the Premier League, then Palace would have an instant bargain.

The saving grace for Strand Larsen will be if it is Jose Bordalas who arrives to replace Glasner this summer. The managerial candidate prefers a 4-4-2 system, which would see Burkardt and the former Wolves man combine.

It's a system which will need ruthlessness, though. The Getafe manager is known for his defensive, combative style which can produce one, brutal sting per game.

Burkardt has already proved that he doesn't need much of a sniff at goal before delivering, so the ball would very much be in his partner's court.

The worrying flip side to that for Palace is if they failed to sig the Frankfurt man and were left with a striker who needs service in a system which would rarely provide it.
