Liverpool will need to strengthen again in the summer and have been linked with a top level defender.

Arne Slot has shown this season with Liverpool just how stubborn he can be.

The Reds boss is well within his rights to stick to his guns when he has an opinion, but there is no doubt that some of his decision making has left a lot to be desired. One such call has been insisting that Milos Kerkez starts every game, even when he is struggling at both ends of the park and looking like the jersey is too big for him.

Liverpool offered new left-back

With Andy Robertson set to leave Liverpool, a left-back is being targeted with one of Europe’s best reportedly being offered to the Anfield hierarchy. According to TEAMtalk transfer journalist Graeme Bailey, Alphonso Davies could be heading to the Premier League:

“Alphonso Davies has been offered to a host of Premier League clubs, TEAMtalk can reveal, with intermediaries actively sounding out potential interest, holding talks with Manchester United, Liverpool, and several other top English sides.

“Liverpool and Man Utd, both understood to be in the market for a new left-back this summer, were among the first clubs to be approached. However, TEAMtalk can also confirm that Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have been contacted and made aware that Davies could be attainable under the right conditions.”

Why Liverpool need Davies

Kerkez has shown flashes of what he is capable of but most of Liverpool’s best performances have come with Robertson at left-back. It will be expected that the Hungary international has settled fully by the time next season kicks off, but there needs to be competition in case he doesn’t.

What Liverpool need to avoid is a repeat of the right-back fiasco where six different players have been used and none of them looking wholly convincing either. They need two players who they can trust, who can push each other and who the manager can pick on form. Too many players have been given too many chances in the Liverpool starting XI this season purely because there were no other options. Signing Davies would be an upgrade and force Kerkez to up his game.
