Harry Maguire confirms contract talks and predicts ‘big summer’ for Man Utd

Harry Maguire claims he is close to agreeing a new contract with Manchester United that will see him stay put next season.

It was announced in January that Casemiro is leaving Manchester United at the end of the season, when the experienced Brazilian’s contract expires.

Since then, questions over Harry Maguire’s future have intensified, mostly because of the important role he has played in the team during the improved run of form under Michael Carrick since the beginning of 2026.

Carrick stressed he enjoys working with Maguire when recently asked about the centre-back’s contract talks. Now, at the age of 33, the defender has been recalled to the England squad – for the first time in 18 months under Thomas Tuchel, having previously been regarded as one of Gareth Southgate’s most trusted lieutenants.

Harry Maguire optimistic over new Man Utd deal

Maguire has been a mainstay in United’s defence since Carrick became interim head coach.

The Red Devils will be without the England international when they take on rivals Leeds in the Premier League following a 24-day break between matches.

It remains to be seen if Carrick will have Lisandro Martinez back to full fitness, but that could grant Ayden Heaven an opportunity to get his first start under the interim head coach, with Leny Yoro almost guaranteed to remain in the line-up.

However, on the topic of staying at Old Trafford, Maguire has made his intentions clear in an interview with The Standard. The newspaper also claims a new contract would be a one-year deal with an option for another 12 months.

“There’s been talks,” Maguire confirmed.

“I think we’ll reach an agreement where it’s best for the club and myself. What that agreement is, I’m sure you’ll find out over the next few weeks.

“But I think it’ll get sorted sooner rather than later, whether I stay or leave. But I think it will – it should – get sorted pretty soon.”

He added: “The club want me to drive the club forward still, and they feel like I’ve got a big part to play.

“I don’t want to be not feeling important. I want to be important to the club. So we need to sit down and speak – and I’ve got a long time off now with the red card.”

Harry Maguire makes Man Utd prediction ahead of transfer window

United have several big decisions to make in the summer, including who will be the head coach next season and what players are going to be targeted to bolster the squad.

It sounds like Maguire will be part of the team next season, but he has also been impressed by Carrick since he returned to the club in a coaching capacity.

Maguire said: “Carrick coming in, he’s been amazing. He speaks really well. He’s tactically very, very good.”

When asked if Carrick should get the job beyond this season, Maguire didn’t give a straight answer. Instead he stressed that it is going to be a big summer for United in terms of recruitment.

“It’s not up to us. I think there are seven games left. We put ourselves in a great position.

“I think we’ve got to finish the season strong, and I think he should go right into the mix of the other candidates and let the process begin.

“I’m sure it will do and I’m sure it’s going to be a thorough process, and it’s going to be a big summer. We know that for Manchester United.”
