Dominic Calvert-Lewin has returned to the England set-up after five years. He is in the 35-man squad for the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

The Leeds United striker has scored 10 times in the Premier League this season, which has earned him an England call-up, when it seemed that his time to play for the national team was over.

Calvert-Lewin’s form has tapered off as he has not scored a Premier League goal since February. However, that has not deterred Thomas Tuchel from picking him.

However, Roy Keane indicated that other strikers in the Premier League deserved a call-up ahead of the 28-year-old just before the World Cup this summer.

Roy Keane aims a dig at Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Gary Neville and the rest of his Overlap panel were discussing the England national team squad set to be in action over the coming week.

Calvert-Lewin’s inclusion cropped up, and former Arsenal striker Ian Wright is pleased to see the Leeds striker return to the national team set-up.

Tottenham forward Dominic Solanke has also made it to the squad, and Roy Keane made a pointed remark about who should have been in the team.

The former Manchester United captain feels Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, who has scored 12 Premier League goals this season, is better than both Solanke and Calvert-Lewin.

Wright said, “Solanke is in, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, I’m pleased for Dominic.”

“I think Welbeck’s better than them two”, Keane added.

The Leeds striker deserves his chance

Calvert-Lewin’s recent form has been concerning. He has not scored since early February and has missed some big chances, including shooting wide from the penalty spot against Crystal Palace.

However, he has been Leeds’ talisman this season, and his performances through the winter have helped the side pick up the points that are still keeping them away from the drop zone.

Ollie Watkins remains the favourite to become Harry Kane’s understudy in the World Cup, and Calvert-Lewin remains the outside to make the final squad.

However, he deserved the England call-up for the friendlies as a reward for what he has done in the Premier League this season.

Danny Welbeck’s form has been better, and he has scored more goals than Calvert-Lewin at this stage of the season.

However, if it comes down to those two, Tuchel will favour the younger Leeds striker to be the back-up to Kane during a hot summer in the United States.
