Leeds United are currently 15th in the Premier League, sitting four points above the relegation zone as they look to secure their top-flight status this season.

But they’re far from safe, and there’s a growing sense that they could still be pulled into the relegation battle over the final seven games.

Leeds United move strongly for Souffian El Karouani

James Justin’s versatility has allowed Daniel Farke a breather as the Leeds manager does not have another left-back in the squad beyond Gabriel Gudmundsson.

With Leeds expected to continue to play a 5-3-2 formation next season, signing a left-back has become a priority, with Sam Byram also expected to leave.

Leeds have been keeping tabs on FC Utrecht’s Souffian El Karouani this season, and have been considering taking him to Elland Road.

He has registered a sensational 16 assists in all competitions, but other Premier League clubs also have their eyes on the full-back ahead of the summer.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Leeds are looking to move strongly for the Moroccan in the coming months to move ahead of the competition.

Everton’s owners, the Friedkin Group, are also interested in the left-back and are considering taking him to Roma, the Serie A side they own.

He will be out of contract at the end of the season, and Leeds are hoping to convince him to move to Elland Road on a free transfer in the summer.

Farke needs another left-back

Gudmundsson is currently the only natural left-back in the Leeds United squad, and his performances have been solid enough that the club haven’t felt an urgent need to strengthen that position.

Justin has also stepped in impressively when required, but it was clear that Daniel Farke was keen to bring in another left-back during the winter window.

Adding a proper backup for Gudmundsson is expected to be a key priority next summer, although Leeds are unlikely to spend heavily on someone who won’t be a guaranteed starter.

That’s where El Karouani fits the bill; his contract situation makes him an attractive option, and he would likely be open to a supporting role at a Premier League club.
