Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, Lewis Miley: Newcastle United injury list & return dates

Newcastle United injuries: The latest on Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, Sven Botman, Sandro Tonali, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth.

Newcastle United have a three-week break between matches for the first time since the start of the 2025/26 season.

While it gives Newcastle’s squad time to recover from a demanding fixture schedule that has seen them regularly play three games a week throughout the season, it also means the club will be forced to dwell on a 2-1 derby defeat to Sunderland that leaves them sitting 12th in the table.

The Magpies have seven games left to salvage their Premier League season. And with a calmer fixture schedule and key players returning from injury, there are no excuses for Eddie Howe and his players.

Here is the Newcastle United injury list and expected return dates as things stand...

Sandro Tonali (groin)

Sandro Tonali has missed Newcastle’s last two Premier League matches against Chelsea and Sunderland. The midfielder sat out the Chelsea game due to illness before suffering a groin injury against Barcelona in the Champions League which ruled him out for the Sunderland match.

He has since joined up with the Italy squad on international duty, but has been on a limited training schedule as he remains a doubt for Thursday’s crucial World Cup play-off match against Northern Ireland.

Howe explained Tonali was just a matter of days away from being able to play in the Sunderland match so will be expected to be back fully fit and available for the Crystal Palace match.

Expected return date: Crystal Palace (A) - 12/04

Bruno Guimaraes (hamstring)

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has been out for over a month with a hamstring injury but has since returned to England for the final stages of his recovery.

It is hoped he will be back for the Crystal Palace match, but a recent bout of mumps has impacted his rehabilitation as he was forced to isolate.

Expected return date: Crystal Palace (A) - 12/04

Lewis Miley (thigh)

Lewis Miley’s injury has been one of the mysteries of the season for Newcastle. Initially diagnosed as a dead leg back in January, the issue has since ruled the 19-year-old out of action for over two months.

Further assessment showed muscle damage to Miley’s thigh and his return has repeatedly been pushed back with the muscle still yet to heal. It is hoped Miley will be back for the Palace match, though that is no guarantee, with suggestions the club may play it safe and keep him out for longer in order to prevent a longer-term issue.

“It’ll be after the internationals for Lewy,” Howe confirmed last week. “We anticipate he will be back, hopefully, after the break.”

Expected return date: Crystal Palace (A) - 12/04

Fabian Schar (ankle)

Fabian Schar has been out since January after suffering an ankle injury that required surgery. He is off crutches and will step up his recovery further during the international break with the hope rather than the expectation of returning against Crystal Palace.

Expected return date: AFC Bournemouth (H) - 18/04

Sven Botman (face)

Sven Botman suffered a facial fracture during the Sunderland match which forced him off and required surgery, which has been successful.

The issue will sideline the defender for several weeks but it is hoped he will return to action before the end of the season.

Expected return date: West Ham United (H) - 17/05

Emil Krafth (knee)

Emil Krafth hasn’t been seen in action since suffering a knee injury back in November. Although not initially thought to be too serious, it resulted in him having season-ending knee surgery.

With Krafth’s contract up in the summer, he may have already played his last game for the club.

Expected return date: Summer 2026
