Everton likely to prevail in legal Friedkin dilemma – Situation monitored by UEFA

Everton

David Moyes probably doesn’t get enough credit for keeping Everton around a European spot this season. There is now a chance that the Toffees could play in Europe, despite possible regulatory concerns.

The Friedkins’ second club – AS Roma, also find themselves in a race for Europe. At one point, they were sitting well inside the top four and there was firm belief about a return to the Champions League. However, they have slipped to sixth in the table.

Roma are three points away from fourth-placed Como, finding themselves in a Europa League or Conference League spot.

As things stand, both the Friedkins-owned clubs are in a similar situation. There is every chance they can play in Europe next season.

This is now becoming a cause for concern but Everton might find some favour.

Case will be assessed by UEFA

La Repubblica – relayed by RomaNews, note that if Roma and Everton qualify for the same UEFA competition, one of them will have to be removed.

This is because of UEFA regulations, which don’t allow two clubs with the same ownership to play in the same competition. This has mainly been seen in the Champions League. Girona did initially face problems due to their common ownership with Manchester City until multiple club stakes were transferred to independent trustees.

As of now, the Friedkin case is being assessed by UEFA. The American ownership could follow the Girona path and have both their clubs play in the competition by setting up a trust.

It is believed that if no solution works out, it will be Everton who will be picked over Roma. That’s the Italian slant, where it’s believed the Toffees will get priority if it comes to it.

Qualification will be due credit to Moyes’ work

Should Everton manage to qualify for a European competition, it will be quite an achievement for the Toffees. It will speak volumes for the impressive work David Moyes has done, picking the club up from difficult times.n financial troubles were also lingering around.

Currently, they are only three points behind Liverpool, who occupy a Europa League spot. Importantly, the two sides lock horns in an all-important Merseyside derby in April. Before that, they take on Brentford, who are just above them in the table.

The next few weeks will decide everything about Everton’s season.
