Casemiro could join Lionel Messi this summer
Manchester United might face a midfield challenge next season
This might be the best season Casemiro has had at United
Manchester United superstar Casemiro is nearing an exit from the club in the upcoming transfer window. The Brazilian international is set to leave on a free transfer this summer.
Casemiro has certainly turned some heads with his performances for United this season. The five-time Champions League winner has been pivotal to the Red Devils’ comeback run in the second half of the season under interim manager Michael Carrick.
However, it’s time United starts planning for the future and search for alternatives, as the departure of the Brazilian defensive midfielder looks imminent. His contract is set to expire soon, and there’s no positive news regarding an extension either.
Moreover, Casemiro had already made his desire to leave at the end of this season clear back in January. In the meantime, reports have emerged suggesting possible next destinations for him.
According to The Athletic, Major League Soccer giants Inter Miami and LA Galaxy are interested in securing Casemiro’s services when he departs United after this campaign.
The MLS has emerged as an attractive destination for players in the twilight of their careers, with superstars like Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi among others choosing it. So it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Casemiro joins that list and even links up with Messi at Inter Miami.
Life After Casemiro
Casemiro is undoubtedly one of, if not the best, defensive midfielders of his generation. The veteran has won almost all major club trophies and is a legend at Real Madrid.
The 34-year-old had a superb start to his United career, and despite a poor sophomore season, he refound form. Few would argue that this season has been the best Casemiro has produced in Red Devils colours. The Brazilian has appeared in 30 matches in all competitions this campaign, scoring seven goals and providing two assists.
The Red Devils will certainly miss Casemiro once he is gone, especially as they are a little thin in the defensive midfield, with Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo as the only other options. Additionally, both are young players with limited experience.
As a result, Manchester United will have to bring in reinforcements, preferably someone proven, in the next transfer window to fill the void that will be left by Casemiro.
Potential Replacements
A host of names like Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba are already said to be on United’s radar as potential replacements for Casemiro. Other than that, Newcastle United’s captain, Bruno Guimaraes, also makes a strong case, although signing him would be a very difficult task.
United are currently sitting in third position and are on course to qualify for the Champions League next season. It is expected that this will help make the club an attractive destination for players. For now, though, there’s not much to do other than wait and watch.
