Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be hoping he gets a chance to impress on Friday evening when England take on Uruguay at Wembley Stadium. The Leeds United forward has spent the past few days in the England camp, no doubt trying to catch manager Thomas Tuchel's eye with his performances in training.
It is hoped Calvert-Lewin will get an opportunity to further his cause for a place at the World Cup by having a meaningful run out against Marcelo Bielsa's team at Wembley.
The Leeds front man is part of a huge 35-man squad, with 11 forwards named. Of those 11 names, Calvert-Lewin is not up against the likes of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer for a place in the squad, instead it's Dominic Solanke who he finds himself up against as a direct understudy to Harry Kane, with the absent Ollie Watkins firmly in that bracket too.
Now, Roy Keane has suggested a new name should be in front of both Calvert-Lewin and Solanke, labelling Brighton striker Danny Welbeck as better than both the aforementioned players.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Ian Wright was expressing his delight at seeing Calvert-Lewin being given a chance, when Keane made his pointed remark.
Wright said, “Solanke is in, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, I’m pleased for Dominic.” Keane's response was swift; “I think Welbeck’s better than them two”, he said.
Welbeck is the top scoring English player in the Premier League this season with 12 goals, two ahead of Calvert-Lewin, who is currently in a dry spell having not scored for two months. With Tuchel naming a 35-man squad that doesn't include Watkins or Welbeck, the tough task ahead is clear for Calvert-Lewin, who knows he needs to impress this week and rediscover his goal-scoring touch if he is to have a shot at a place in the squad for the World Cup this summer.
