Club ‘waiting for answers’ as player could decide to join Sunderland

Jhon Lucumi

Italy, Milan, 2025 09 14: Jhon Lucumi (Bologna FC) dribbles in center field in the second half during soccer game AC Milan vs Bologna FC, Serie A Enilive 2025-2026 day 3, San Siro Stadium

Jhon Lucumi was a major target for Sunderland last summer. Despite the Black Cats’ best attempts, a deal never went through but a move is not out of the realms of possibility yet.

The Colombian has been fairly important for Bologna this season. He has played 35 times in all competitions, doing well in the Europa League and in Serie A. He did struggle early on in the campaign, after his transfer desire, but is now back to his former self.

Sport Witness had covered talk of Sunderland’s summer offer for the defender. This was made after a release clause in Lucumi’s contract expired, with the Rossoblu also extending his deal until 2027.

They managed to hold on to the player – and were proud of that. However, their attempts for a new long-term deal have failed.

Now, the Wearside club can return to the fray for him.

Decision after the World Cup

Gazzetta dello Sport report today that Bologna remain ‘waiting for answers’ from Jhon Lucumi about a new deal. Last summer, they sold Dan Ndoye and Sam Beukema and weren’t keen on another major sale.

The player, meanwhile, is waiting for the summer transfer window to come around so that he can seal an exit.

More than that, he wants to impress at the World Cup for Colombia. This will help him show off to potential suitors and get the best deal possible in the summer.

This is likely to give hope to Sunderland, especially if they decide to come back in for the defender.

The report sheds light on how Bologna are almost resigned to losing Lucumi. He is increasingly seen as a leader of the past, with Torbjørn Heggem seen as the future.

Our take: Lucumi can take Sunderland to a new level

It is fair to say that Jhon Lucumi is one of the best defenders in Serie A. That has been the case for three seasons now.

He has also played in the Champions League, and has impressed in the Europa League this season. If Sunderland have a chance, they simply can’t miss out on the 28-year-old, especially if they can land him for less than €28m.

More suitors can join the race in the summer because of the World Cup. That is why Regis Le Bris’ side might need to start laying down the foundation of a move already.
