Manchester United launch ‘stratospheric’ transfer bid – We take a look at situation

Fermin Lopez

Manchester United have launched a ‘stratospheric’ bid for Barcelona midfielder Fermín López, but the Catalans giants are refusing to even open the door to the idea.

Estadio Deportivo report information from journalist José Álvarez on El Chiringuito that López is the number one target for Manchester United this summer as they look to bolster their midfield.

A breakout star

Fermín López has gone from surprise package at the Camp Nou to one of Europe’s most influential young midfielders.

The 22-year-old is now a star man under Hansi Flick, with 12 goals and 16 assists this season putting him firmly on the radar of Europe’s elite.

Manchester United are convinced that his profile is tailor-made for the Premier League. As a result, he is now at the top of their summer wishlist.

€100m bid sends shockwaves

Álvarez reports that Manchester United are prepared to go as high as €100m to secure the Spanish international.

That is an offer that Barcelona would find hard to refuse despite his contract running until 2031.

Their interest in him is nothing new. But it has gained momentum in the last few hours. Their scouts value his versatility and ability to influence different phases of the game.

Barcelona’s answer

Despite the size of the offer, Barcelona’s stance is unwavering. Fermín López is not for sale. The club view him as a non-negotiable pillar of their future.

Selling him, even for a nine-figure fee, is seen internally as a step backwards. López also has no intention of leaving. He feels valued, settled and central to Barcelona’s plans.

His focus is on continuing his development at the club where he has finally broken through. Manchester United’s interest may be real, but the both the club and the player share the same view, his future lies at Barcelona.

Transfer story feels familiar

The problem with this latest report is that it feels very familiar. This summer it is Manchester United, last year it was Chelsea.

Sport Witness covered various reports at the time regarding a €40-70m bid from the Blues for Fermín López. The Barcelona midfielder commented on the interest and how he never considered it.

Now it is reportedly Manchester United offering big sums. The reality, perhaps, is that this is another piece of Barcelona propaganda.

The club and their players turning down big Premier League offers always does well among the Camp Nou faithful.
