Bad news for £124m duo as Newcastle United's bold transfer plans revealed

Newcastle United are set for a transformative summer window to reignite the Saudi-backed project.

Newcastle United are reportedly in the market for a new striker this summer despite spending £124million on Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

While their defensive frailties continue to face scrutiny, the Magpies have looked toothless throughout the campaign. For context, Newcastle are averaging just 1.42 goals per game - down from 1.79 last season.

Eddie Howe has clearly struggled to fill the void left by Alexander Isak’s controversial exit in August. The Swede netted 27 goals across all competitions in 2024-25 before joining Liverpool for a British record sum.

Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa woes

Woltemade and Wissa arrived to help plug the Isak gap but neither have enjoyed stellar debut seasons at St James’ Park. Newcastle appeared to strike gold with club-record arrival Woltemade as he scored four goals in his first five Premier League games.

However, the Magpies have seemingly lost faith in the German. With no top-flight goal since December, Woltemade is currently operating as a midfielder - a move that has attracted criticism from his national team coach.

As for Wissa, he followed a similar path to Isak by downing tools at Brentford to force his move to Newcastle. The Magpies paid over the odds - a hefty £55million - to sign the 29-year-old.

Just one Premier League goal in black-and-white stripes has done little to justify that investment. Wissa’s time on Tyneside has been marred by injuries and fitness issues.

Newcastle United chase new striker

Sky Sports claim Newcastle will target a new striker in the summer window. Alongside CEO David Hopkinson, new sporting director Ross Wilson believes Howe can turn the tide on Tyneside amid growing fan discontent.

Calls have ramped up following the derby defeat to Sunderland for Howe to face the axe. However, there is an understanding at boardroom level that mitigating factors have severely hampered the campaign.

Signing a striker would be a bold move given last summer’s outlay. It is unclear what doing so could mean for Wissa, Woltemade and Will Osula’s future at St James' Park.
