Man Utd surge into race to sign "tremendous" star who's Arsenal's most-expensive defender ever

Manchester United have now set their sights on an Arsenal player, with a whole host of Premier League clubs joining the race for his signature.

Man Utd looking to make improvements in defence

Man United have been on a fantastic run since bringing in Michael Carrick as interim manager, with Harry Maguire playing a starring role, and the former Leicester City man has now confirmed he's held discussions regarding a new contract.

Maguire said: "I think there's been talks. I think we'll reach an agreement where it's best for the club and myself. What that agreement is, I'm sure you'll find out over the next few weeks. But, yeah, I think it'll get sorted sooner rather than later, whether I stay or leave. But I think it will - it should - get sorted pretty soon.

"I love this club. But it's got to be right for myself, it's got to be right for the club as well."

Luke Shaw has also been an important player for Carrick, featuring in every Premier League game this season, but bringing in a new left-back is also on the to-do list this summer, and talks have been held about a deal for Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.

The Red Devils are also aiming to bring in a versatile defender, as per a fresh report, which states they are going after an Arsenal star.

Arsenal open to sanctioning Ben White departure

Indeed, according to a report from TEAMtalk, Man United have now surged into the race to sign Ben White, with the Gunners now willing to sanction a departure this summer, should they receive a sizeable fee for the defender, who is capable of playing at centre-back and right-back.

Several Premier League clubs could be set to battle it out for White, with Liverpool and Chelsea also keeping an eye on his situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

White, who is Arsenal's most expensive defender in history at £40m, has struggled for game time this term and Mikel Arteta's side have already started looking at potential replacements, but the manager may be disappointed to see him move on, given that the Spaniard is a big fan.

Arteta has also praised the Englishman this season, saying: "I'm very happy that we have him back in the best version of himself as well. And we're going to need him because he's a tremendous player."

The 28-year-old has barely kicked a ball in 2025/26, but he has returned to the fold in recent weeks, starting in the EFL Cup final defeat against Manchester City, and the Englishman has earned a call-up to Thomas Tuchel's squad for the upcoming friendlies.

Manchester United will make an elite midfield signing their priority this summer.

White is very experienced in the Premier League, making 167 appearances in the competition, so he could be a solid addition to Man United's backline, ahead of what will hopefully be a busier 2026-27 campaign, with Champions League qualification in their grasp.
