‘On their day’ – Tottenham receive relegation rallying cry from Wayne Rooney

Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has now opened up on exactly what Tottenham Hotspur need if they are to avoid relegation this season.

Many Tottenham Hotspur fans were left stunned last Sunday when their side suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Before the game, it did seem like Spurs were beginning to find some rhythm, as they managed a draw with Liverpool in the league game before Forest and a 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid.

On the afternoon, Tottenham did look like the better side throughout the first half, but sloppy defending from a corner kick led to Forest going in front, and from then on, Spurs never found their feet.

Wayne Rooney’s verdict on Tottenham’s defeat against Nottingham Forest

Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has now opened up on Tottenham’s painful loss to Nottingham Forest.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney reacted to Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat, describing the result as a major setback despite recent positive performances and underlining how damaging the loss could be in their relegation fight.

He said (BBC Sport): “Getting positive results against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, it felt like they were getting back on track – then to play the team you are fighting against relegation at home and lose 3-0 is an absolute nightmare.

“Obviously, West Ham losing helps them a little bit, but it could not have been a worse day for Tottenham.

“You think only a few years ago they were in the Champions League final and won the Europa League last season. To be on the brink of getting relegated is an absolute disaster. I cannot believe they are down there, to be honest.”

Spurs confidence concerns raised as Wayne Rooney assesses survival battle

Rooney also opened up on the battle for Premier League survival. He addressed how quickly the situation can change while highlighting confidence as the key factor behind Tottenham’s struggles.

He said, “One win changes everything. One win brings Leeds and Forest back into it.

“[Of Spurs’ remaining opponents] they could beat any of them on their day. I think the big thing is confidence. We have seen in the last week, they get a point at Anfield and then beat Atletico.

“A lot is on confidence and belief, not just from the players, but from the fans as well, and that just seems to be as low as it can get at the minute.”
