PNE saw four first team players leave in the January transfer window
Preston North End have brought lots of fresh faces through the door this season, meaning others have had to leave.
One of those wasn’t by choice, with Everton recalling Harrison Armstrong from his loan spell at the start of January. As well as the midfielder’s premature exit, Mads Frokjaer and Stefan Thordarson were sold in January while Will Keane headed out on loan to Reading - effectively bringing his second PNE stint to an end.
Going back to the summer, FC Thun bought Layton Stewart permanently. Huddersfield Town snapped up Jack Whatmough and Jeppe Okkels made the move to Swedish top flight side, Djurgårdens. With the current campaign approaching the final few weeks, how have they all fared?
Jeppe Okkels: The Allsvenskan campaign concluded in November, with Djurgardens finishing fifth in the table. Okkels made eight appearances after signing for the club and scored four goals.
Jack Whatmough: It’s been an injury-hit year for the centre-back, who has only played six games for Huddersfield. A calf issue saw him miss almost six months of action. He has been back on the bench for the last three matches.
Layton Stewart: His parent club, FC Thun, sit top of the Swiss Super League. Stewart played five matches between August and December, before joining AFC Wimbledon on loan in February. He is yet to feature for them.
Harrison Armstrong: The midfielder has featured in 10 of the 12 Premier League games since returning to Everton. Six of those have been starts, though he’s only been given 13 minutes in the last four league fixtures.
Will Keane: The forward made a positive impact at Reading with back-to-back goals against Exeter and Northampton. He then missed a handful of games through injury but returned to action on March 10 and has featured in the last four matches.
Stefan Thordarson: Looks to be enjoying himself over in Germany. Hannover are fifth but only three points off 2. Bundesliga leaders, Schalke. Thordarson has made three starts and six substitute appearances, with one goal and one assist contributed.
Mads Frokjaer: Doesn’t look to have really announced himself yet, at boyhood club Brondby. Steve Cooper’s side have drawn three games nil-nil and lost two, one-nil. Frokjaer has started four of his five appearances but been taken off at half-time, twice.
