Francesco Pio Esposito
Newcastle United target Francesco Pio Esposito
Francesco Pio Esposito is arguably one of the best youngsters in the game right now, and Newcastle United have been provided a little transfer encouragement.
Earlier this month,Sport Witness covered claims from Italy about the Magpies’ interest in the Inter Milan player.
TuttoSport spoke of Newcastle United sending officials to the Nerazzurri’s 1-1 draw against Atalanta two weeks ago. They appeared certain that the striker has attracted the interest of Eddie Howe’s side, who have been looking at him for weeks.
The newspaper also killed any hope for a transfer, as Esposito is nearing a new contract at Inter. He will also earn a bigger wage in the renewal, which will tie him down until 2031.
Now, a potential price tag has emerged for the Italy international.
€80m likely to be enough
Calciomercato IT make it clear that everyone at Inter Milan currently has a price. That is mainly because they didn’t go beyond the playoffs of the UEFA Champions League. As a result, they have made much less money than they did last season, when they qualified for the Champions League final.
So even if the Nerazzurri present a strong stance in public about Francesco Pio Esposito, things aren’t as certain. A ‘beware of Newcastle’ warning is also fired by the outlet.
This is because if a suitor like the Tyneside club offers €80m, CEO Beppe Marotta will be inclined to accept it. That is simply too much money for Inter, who didn’t make a single major sale last summer. They do make occasional sales of key players and simply can’t reject massive offers.
Even if they tie Esposito down to a new deal, it will only be a way of raising his valuation in the market.
Our take: Newcastle United may not need Esposito
There is no doubting Francesco Pio Esposito’s talent. He has already become a key player for the Italian national team, let alone for Inter.
But Newcastle United spent a huge amount on Nick Woltemade last summer. They also signed Yoan Wissa for a significant amount of money.
Granted, both players have largely underperformed but spending big on another striker may be a stretch. Moreover, Howe’s side can still lose key midfielders in the summer. That will change a lot of their priorities, which makes Esposito simply a luxury signing.
It’s possible though, and Newcastle United have shown interest.
