Jose Mourinho
Newcastle, United Kingdom – 10 21 2025: Jose Mourinho seen during Champions League league phase game between Newcastle United FC and SL Benfica
Newcastle United have seen José Mourinho linked with a potential move to St James’ Park in recent days, but reports from Portugal are already pushing back on that idea.
The speculation around José Mourinho has grown amid ongoing scrutiny of Eddie Howe and Newcastle’s position in the Premier League table.
British press coverage has suggested the Benfica manager could be a natural successor, especially given his history with the club through Bobby Robson.
However, Portuguese newspaper O Jogo presents a very different picture.
Portuguese stance on Mourinho’s future
According to their reporting, there is currently no concrete approach from Newcastle, despite the noise coming from England. More importantly, Mourinho himself is said to be fully committed to his project at SL Benfica.
The 63-year-old still has a year left on his contract, even if there is a clause allowing an early exit. That situation, though, does not appear to be driving any uncertainty internally.
Instead, the report claims Mourinho has set a clear objective – to build a squad capable of winning the Portuguese title next season.
That ambition is shaping his thinking. It also explains why, despite regular approaches from other markets, including Saudi Arabia, he has remained focused on Benfica.
Newcastle links seen as noise rather than movement
José Mourinho did admit earlier this season that Newcastle United is a club he holds affection for. That stems from his time working under Bobby Robson, who remains a major figure in the club’s history.
Even so, the Portuguese outlet insists that sentiment does not translate into any current willingness to move.
From Benfica’s side, there is already planning underway for next season. Mourinho is said to be working closely with president Rui Costa and director Mário Branco on squad decisions.
Those discussions are ongoing, although more formal meetings about the 2026/27 campaign are expected closer to the end of the season.
What this means for Newcastle United
José Mourinho’s name will likely continue to circulate in English coverage, especially while uncertainty surrounds Eddie Howe.
However, based on the information coming from Portugal, there is no indication of a deal developing at this stage.
For Newcastle, that leaves the situation unchanged for now. The club may admire Mourinho’s profile and experience, but any move would require a significant shift in his current stance.
As things stand, the message from Portugal is clear – this is speculation driven externally, rather than a transfer story with real momentum.
