Confirmed: Promising Sunderland U21s trio complete non-league loan transfers

Sunderland trio Elias Lenz, Charlie Dinsdale, and Finlay Holcroft have headed out on loan.

Promising Sunderland trio Elias Lenz, Charlie Dinsdale, and Finlay Holcroft have completed loan moves to non-league outfit Whitby Town, it has been confirmed.

Lenz put pen to paper on a temporary agreement that will run until the end of the season, while Dinsdale and Holcroft have each joined the Seasiders on a one-month deal, with all three aiming to gain valuable first team experience having impressed for the U21s on Wearside in recent times.

For his part, Lenz has featured six times for Graeme Murty’s development side since January, having missed the majority of 2025 through injury due to a hamstring complaint that required surgery. The midfielder initially signed for Sunderland from RB Leipzig in 2024, but is still yet to make his senior debut at the Stadium of Light.

Meanwhile, defender Holcroft has played 16 league games for the U21s this term, and attacking talent Dinsdale has scored one and assisted three across 11 Premier League 2 outings.

What has been said about Sunderland midfielder Elias Lenz?

Speaking about Lenz’s long-awaited return from injury back in January, Sunderland U21s boss Murty said: “He’s been really diligent in his work, and we hope that all the guys who are rehabbing currently take this time to maximise their improvements to body, maximise their opportunity to help any areas of growth they may have.

“We hope that when they step in for a pitch, they can let go of a lot of the competition and try and make it as fun for them as we can. But we know that we have to be the adults in the room because they’re really keen and they want to do more than possibly we allow them at times.”

At the time of writing, Whitby find themselves just above the relegation zone in the Northern Premier League, two points clear of the bottom three after a slump in form during which they have lost each of their last three matches. The Seasiders’ next outing comes away at 10th-placed Warrington Town on Saturday afternoon, with Lenz, Holcroft, and Dinsdale all in contention to make their debuts under co-managers Lee Bullock and Jason Kennedy.
