Leeds United star speaks out after injury blow on international duty

Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson has seemingly allayed fears over his fitness after being forced off in Sweden’s win over Ukraine.

The 26-year-old has been a crucial figure for the Whites since his move from Lille in the last summer window.

He has taken to life in the Premier League like a duck to water and his absence was felt in Leeds’ goalless draw with Brentford while he served a suspension.

Gudmundsson is currently on international duty with Sweden, who are now one game away from World Cup qualification after defeating Ukraine 3-1 in their play-off semi-final.

However, Leeds fans were given reason for concern when Gudmundsson took a knock to the knee and was subsequently substituted in the 77th minute.

Gabriel Gudmundsson speaks out

However, as reported by the Sweden Herald, Gudmundsson has hinted he could recover for his national team’s play-off final showdown with Poland on Tuesday (March 31).

When questioned about the ice pack taped to his knee, the left-back said: "It's the same as always. Take care of your body and make sure you're ready for Tuesday. Of course, I wanted to [play on], but it was a trade-off and it felt good.”

Regarding the win, he said: "It means an incredible amount, not just to us but to everyone else as well. There are a lot of positives to take away from this match. We will take that feeling with us."

Importance to Leeds United

Gudmundsson poses quite the threat down the left flank and Leeds missed his attacking qualities in their dull draw with Brentford.

Having served his one-match suspension, he could feature for Daniel Farke’s side in their FA Cup quarter-final against West Ham United on April 5.
