Jamie Carragher has hit back at Liverpool fans accusing him of disrespecting Mohamed Salah, after he listed the Egyptian as No. 6 on his list of the club's greatest players. On Tuesday, Salah revealed he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

He confirmed his abrupt decision by uploading an emotional video featuring many of his best moments at the club, while the Reds also made a statement of their own. However, two days after, club media uploaded an interview they did with Carragher, where he listed their best ever players, in his opinion.

On the ex-Liverpool defender's list, Salah was marked as the sixth, with Ian Rush, John Barnes, Graeme Souness, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard ahead of him.

Many on social media accused Carragher of being disrespectful to Salah over the decision to upload it, barely 48 hours after the Egyptian's departure was confirmed.

In response, Carragher defended himself, insisting there was no disrespect intended while also stating it was the club's internal media team who posted the video. He tweeted: "It’s not poor timing from anyone, I did this interview before Salah announced his decision.

"Then [I] went on the overlap a day after the Salah announcement & brought up I’d put him 6th on the LFC list. The club decided to put it out before I gave away my full list!"

After another person on social media suggested Carragher was trying to stick the boot into Salah, given the verbal sparring sessions they have had throughout this season, the former central defender hit back again.

He wrote: "I’m not one of his biggest critics, when have I ever criticised Salah the player. I said he’s the 2nd best foreign player ever in the PL! You & plenty of others don’t know enough about the club’s history & are being very disrespectful to other players on that list!”

On the Overlap, reacting to Salah's exit, Carragher suggested Liverpool's highest ever Premier League goalscorer may look to return to Italy, where he played for Fiorentina and AS Roma before moving to Liverpool. Carragher said: "I think Mo Salah, the way he's driven like a Ronaldo, I don't see the Saudi thing just yet.

"I can see him in Italy with one of the giants. I just think your career's over when you go there [Saudi Arabia]. I think he'll still be looking at his Champions League record or how many goals he can get.

"I still think he thinks, 'I'm still one of the best players, and me leaving now is not the end of my top-level career, I've still got something to give'."
