Aston Villa star suffers injury scare in friendly clash

Winger will be assessed after sustaining injury in friendly fixture.

Villa are sweating on the fitness of Jadon Sancho after the winger suffered a shoulder injury in Friday’s friendly with Elche.

The on loan Manchester United star left the pitch with his right arm in a sling after landing awkwardly during the first half of the 2-1 defeat in Spain.

Sancho will now be further assessed by Villa’s medical staff with boss Unai Emery hoping the issue is not serious.

The 26-year-old had been among the club’s brightest performers in back-to-back wins against Lille and West Ham, laying on goals for skipper John McGinn in both matches.

Any enforced absence now would be a significant blow for Villa, who are chasing success in both the Premier League and Europe over the season’s final two months.

Villa are back in action on April 9 when they play the first leg of a Europa League quarter-final away at Bologna.

Emery’s men, who sit fourth in the Premier League, then visit Nottingham Forest on April 12.

Villa have a six-point cushion inside the top-five with seven matches of the league season remaining.

Sancho was among the non-international members of Villa’s squad who travelled to Murcia on Wednesday for a warm weather training camp, which included the friendly with Elche.

Defender Pau Torres headed Emery’s team into a first half lead but they were pegged back before the break and then conceded a late winner.
