Michael Mellon could make a surprise comeback for Oldham Athletic before the end of the season.

The Burnley youngster, who signed a season-long loan at Boundary Park, suffered a badly torn hamstring in the goalless draw at Grimsby Town on Boxing Day.

He could now hand his dad, Micky, Latics manager, a fitness boost at some point during the remaining eight league games - and potentially beyond, with Latics currently just one point outside of the play-offs - after making significant progress in their respective recoveries.

"You had to pick your 22 players for the last part of the season this week and Michael has been included in that," Latics manager Micky Mellon confirmed.

"Michael is running, so all being well he will be back with us in three weeks."

Mellon returned to Turf Moor for treatment following his injury, but remained on Latics' books as a season-long loan and could be back with the group in April.

"We were always on top of it. Burnley have always kept us up to speed with what was going on," boss Mellon added.

"We could definitely have him back here training with us in three weeks."
