Newcastle United crest change confirmed - David Hopkinson gives supporters clarity on 2027-28…

Newcastle United acknowledge that the current crest “contains design inconsistencies” ahead of a proposed 2027-28 update.

David Hopkinson has insisted there is “no urgency” on changing Newcastle United’s crest.

Giving a loose timeline to the Fan Advisory Board (FAB), the Toon CEO shelved plans to alter the badge for the 2026-27 campaign. Hopkinson set the following season as a realistic date for when supporters can expect change.

Fans were divided when the club announced last year that Newcastle would update their crest for the first time since 1988. That vitriol ramped up when our sister title, NewcastleWorld, published a proposal the club were considering - labelled “horrific” and “laughable” on social media.

Minutes of Newcastle United meeting released

Newcastle officials met with the FAB earlier this month and minutes from the conversation have now been released. A host of issues - including ticketing and the club vision - were raised.

On the plans to change the iconic badge, the notes read: “DH (David Hopkinson) noted that the current crest contains design inconsistencies, including asymmetry.

“When asked about timescales, DH confirmed there is no urgency, stressing the importance of getting the process right. Any proposed changes to the crest will not appear on next season’s shirt, as the design window has passed, and is instead expected to feature from the 2027-28 season.

“RN (Rajat Nayyar, FAB representative) expressed relief that the process will not be rushed, noting that the previous approach felt time pressured. DH confirmed he will update the Board and inform them that the matter has been discussed with the Fan Advisory Board.”

‘It’s time’ - Newcastle United club statement

Newcastle announced the plans to change following NewcastleWorld’s story last year. A message to supporters read: “As our club grows on the global stage, the symbol that represents us needs to be able to keep pace. It needs to show up clearly and confidently across everything - from kits to screens to merchandise.

“So we've been asking ourselves: how well does our current crest represent the club today? And how well will it serve us tomorrow? It's time to update our crest. This isn't a decision we take lightly. We love our crest. It's iconic and has stood us through unforgettable triumphs and testing times.

“But it was created in a different era. Its intricate design doesn't always translate well in today's digital world. And it's difficult to reproduce it clearly and consistently. As football and the world changes, so too must the symbol that unites us. That's why we're coming to you.

“This isn't about walking away from our past. It's about carrying it forward with pride. The crest is part of our story. It's on our shirts and inked in our skin.

“It deserves thoughtful evolution - shaped by the voices of the people who love it. And while some fans may inevitably welcome that change is part of progress, and even the most vociferous of dissenting voices may soften over the weeks and months, they may not feel that way, when they see what the proposal entails.”
