Can Mateus Fernandes Play For Portugal This World Cup?

**Mateus Fernandes has officially achieved his first call-up to the Portuguese national first team. He will now have his eyes set on the seven remaining games this season in an attempt to achieve a campaign at the World Cup.**

Mateus Fetnandes has had a phenomenal season in Claret & blue colours despite West Ham United being in a relegation fight. The Hammers have suffered immensely this season, and since Nuno has arrived at West Ham, he appears to have steadied the ship, running into the final seven games of the season. In doing so, he found the anchor of this West Ham side, which has subsequently seen Fernandes rise to become a star.

Fans initially thought that the ‘hype’ around Fernandes was due to his own purple patch, but that feeling has vanished, given how successful the Portuguese international has been week in week out – the midfield maestro is only second to Declan Rice for defensive midfield stats this Premier League campaign, demonstrating his brilliance upon his return to the League after suffering a relegation with Southampton last season.

His demonstration of immense ability has unfortunately for Hammers fans, sparked rumours of an impending exit with top sides supposedly monitoring his situation, but for his own personal career, his shine in the spotlight is currently being viewed and he certainly has made himself a running candidate to be included within the Portugesse national team this World Cup campaign as he is aiming to help Portugal surpase their Quarter-final crash-out in 2022.

As a question of whether he has the skills to perform at the top level… It’s a ludicrous question to ponder. The 21-year-old has been simply sensational and has been performing consistently at a level that would stand out for Champions League sides. He’s an utterly brilliant player.

He’s a massively valuable asset to Nuno’s side and will be crucial upon return to the Premier League, where he will personally hope to bolster his World Cup chances whilst also helping out West Ham to stay in the Premier League this season, where the Hammers are currently two points from safety.
