Claims around Newcastle United’s plans for the summer transfer window have emerged, which could affect the futures of Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade. The Magpies have a busy end to the season over the next couple of months, but will have an eye on the summer when they will have another chance to strengthen their squad.

Eddie Howe was forced to have a major overhaul of Newcastle’s striker department last summer, with Alexander Isak leaving St James’ Park in a deal worth £130million.

United went on to sign Woltemade and Wissa, with both players enjoying mixed fortunes in their debut season on Tyneside.

As a result, there has been a fresh update on what Newcastle are apparently planning to do in the transfer market this summer, particularly with the centre forward position.

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are looking to sign a new striker when the summer transfer window opens, despite investing £125million in bringing Woltemade and Wissa to St James’ Park less than a year ago.

The report does not go into details about which centre forward Newcastle could target this summer, with the Magpies also said to be exploring the market for a new goalkeeper.

There have also been updates on the futures of Woltemade and Wissa, who have not seen their debut seasons at Newcastle go fully to plan.

Both players are expected to remain part of the Newcastle squad for next season, despite Newcastle looking to sign a new striker.

Wissa spent the first half of the season on the sidelines recovering from a knee injury and Newcastle will hope that a full pre-season will give the DR Congo international the best chance of enjoying his second season on Tyneside.

Woltemade, after regularly getting on the score sheet at the start of the season, has often been utilised in midfield over the last few weeks. It has been reported, though, that Newcastle will plan to have the striker return to a centre forward role for next season.

Howe recently spoke about both Wissa and Woltemade’s debut season at Newcastle and why the Magpies boss expects the duo to play a key role in the final weeks of the season.

"Every player wants to play the biggest games," Howe said before last week’s defeat to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby. "Nick [Woltemade] has had a lot of football this year. I thought he played really well against Chelsea.

"They're in different circumstances. I wouldn't put them together. Yoane has had a big injury and I've said many times here I don't think we've seen the best of him yet. Hopefully that will come. I'd look at them independently rather than together.

"They both have big parts to play in the close of this season. We have eight massive games to go. We now only have the Premier League to focus on. Collectively we have to focus on the rest of the season."
