Steve Bull: Wolves must fight to keep Ladislav Krejci

Published28th Mar 2026, 08:00 GMT

It’s always nice to see Wolves players stepping up on the international stage.

It’s an honour to play for your country and Ladislav Krejci will be delighted to have captained the Czech Republic and played a huge role in the game as they beat the Republic of Ireland.

It was brilliant to see him win the penalty for the first goal, score himself and then score in the shoot-out and if they can beat Denmark in the play-off final, it will be a tremendous experience for Krejci to play at a World Cup.

I’ve done it with England in 1990 and it’s an unbelievable tournament. To achieve that is amazing, especially while playing for Wolves, and I hope Krejci can get there.

It does frustrate me to some degree, as good performances for his country could mean he leaves Wolves and I really want him to stay next season. He’s very talented.

If Wolves do drop to the Championship, he could be key to us bouncing back, but I fully expect there to be interest in him from other clubs.

We have to focus on the last seven Premier League games first, see where we are and then assess it, but it will be a really difficult summer to hold on to some players.

Krejci has also just been named captain of his country and if he does stay with Wolves next season, he could take the armband for us too.

He’s a leader on the pitch, he works hard and reads the game well.

But I do think it will be tough for Wolves to keep him for next season. He’s a Premier League-level player who may not want to play in the Championship.

Meanwhile, Mateus Mane has chosen to play for Portugal under-21s over England.

He’s still very young and has lots to achieve for club and country in his career, and it’s his decision and England’s loss.

From a Wolves perspective, we have to keep him next season and try not to burn him out.

He’s a talented player, but I think we’ve overused him in the last few weeks. He needs a rest to recharge his batteries and hopefully the break in club fixtures will help him.
