Nottingham Forest retain an interest in Napoli defender Mathias Olivera ahead of the summer, it has been claimed.

The Reds were linked with the 28-year-old in the winter window as they looked to bolster their full-back options. Olivera himself was said to be open to a move in a bid to secure regular game time and “in-depth enquiries” reportedly took place.

However, Napoli boss Antonio Conte was seemingly not willing to allow the player to leave without replacing him. Olivera ended up staying put and Forest brought in Luca Netz from Borussia Monchengladbach on deadline day.

Defence is likely to be a department the Reds revisit come the end of the season, though. And it appears Olivera remains on their radar as the summer transfer window approaches.

According to Sport Witness, Forest are “keen” on signing the Uruguay international when the window reopens. The club are said to be continuing “their chase” and are “still trying” to secure his signature.

There could be a key stumbling block to getting any deal done, however. Although Olivera is said to still be “open” to the switch, it would be dependent on the club remaining in the Premier League.

Olivera has made 19 appearances for Napoli in Serie A so far this term, nine of which were from the bench. He joined the Italian outfit from Getafe in 2022 and signed a new deal 12 months ago to keep him tied to the club until 2030. Able to play at left-back and centre-back, he started Friday night’s 1-1 friendly draw with England at Wembley.

Forest boosted their survival hopes with a big 3-0 victory over relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur before the international break. Success in the capital moved Vitor Pereira’s side three points clear of the drop zone with seven games to play.

Full-back is an area where the Reds are light on numbers going into the run-in. Ola Aina and Neco Williams have established themselves as first-choice but the pair do not have much by way of back-up.

Summer signing Nicolo Savona is a doubt to feature again this term after undergoing surgery. Meanwhile, Netz has made just two appearances and was not included in the club’s revised Europa League squad for the knockout stages of the competition.
