"He is" - Thomas Tuchel's Dominic Calvert-Lewin declaration and Leeds United man admission in…

Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was brought on in the 56th minute as England drew 1-1 with Uruguay.

England boss Thomas Tuchel has delivered his verdict on Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s display on his big chance against Uruguay with praise but an admission.

Calvert-Lewin’s fine form for Leeds this season has earned the striker an England recall and the forward was named on the bench for Friday night’s friendly against Uruguay at Wembley.

Tuchel rested many of his stars including captain Harry Kane but Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke was given the nod to start upfront as Calvert-Lewin sat amongst the substitutes.

Calvert-Lewin was then handed his big chance in the 56th minute as he replaced Solanke in leading the line and the Leeds striker was quickly involved in bright link up play.

But the 29-year-old was unable to convert a glorious chance shortly after his introduction, the striker glancing a free header from a few yards out.

The striker was, however, then involved in England’s only goal of the game, diving towards a corner which led to Ben White tapping home at the far post in the 81st minute.

White’s first goal for his country looked set to prove the winner but Uruguay were awarded a controversial penalty for a White foul deep in stoppage time and Federico Valverde converted to seal a 1-1 draw for Marcelo Bielsa’s visitors.

Asked about the displays of Solanke and Calvert-Lewin post match, Tuchel revealed that Calvert-Lewin was upset with himself for failing to score with his header but served up praise for his overall display.

Tuchel said: "The effort today from Dom Solanke, he worked his socks off, he worked like a dog up there, honestly on the first defender.

"He initiated the press, made a lot of sprints and intensive runs.

"With injury from Phil (Foden) we took a double change and it took Dom Calvert-Lewin a little bit to get the press right and to play with the same intensity and them Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a big chance for him and he is upset with himself because it was a chance made for him on his head like six metres out so it's normally a clear goal.

"He could have made like a statement straight away.

"But we played then through the middle and Dom was always available through the middle and we wanted to play a little bit more through the middle in the second half and he did quite well.

"For me, everyone, they tried to stick to the plan, they tried to put the plan into life and this basically includes everyone and also the two strikers."
