Monchi insists he’s “not closing the door on anything” after being linked with a return to top-level football.

Monchi left Aston Villa last September after just over two years as the club’s president of football operations and was replaced by Roberto Olabe.

The Spaniard has recently been linked with a role at Valencia, who are languishing in the bottom half of La Liga which is a far cry from when Villa boss Unai Emery was in charge at the Mestalla.

"Look, I'm not closing the door on anything, but it has to be something that motivates me,” Monchi told Tribuna Deportiva.

“It's a beautiful city and an interesting project, but they haven't called me.

“It saddens me to see Valencia CF like this, because for me it's the fourth best team in Spain.”

“I look more towards Sevilla, but Valencia is the fourth best club in La Liga, and Sevilla, the fifth,” he added, having previously been sporting director at Sevilla.

“The fact that they're now in this struggle, with survival as their objective, should make us all reflect.

“It's a shame to see Valencia like this, given what such a powerful and important institution from Spain's third largest city has meant to football.”
