Dominic Calvert-Lewin of England misses a chance against Uruguay at Wembley Stadium
Ian Wright has doubled down on his opinion of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, insisting the Leeds United forward will get goals for the national team if he's given an opportunity.
Calvert-Lewin's reward for 10 goals in the Premier League so far this season was a first international call-up in five years, with England boss Thomas Tuchel naming him in an enlarged 35-man squad for the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
The 29-year-old wasn't handed a starting opportunity last night against Marcelo Bielsa's side, with Dominic Solanke getting that honour in the absence of Harry Kane. Calvert-Lewin probably offered more than Solanke in his 30 minute appearance, but also missed a great opportunity which he will know he should have scored from.
Despite that, former Arsenal and England striker Wright was impressed by the Leeds man and feels he could be a big asset for England at this summer's World Cup, a sentiment he had previously shared before the match.
“He’s a focal point, that’s got everything," explained Wright. "His aerial ability, his defensive ability, he’s in the box, he’s a box player and on form, I don’t think there’s anyone that can stop him in the air, especially.
"He’s someone who, if you can play towards his strengths, he will score. He causes problems in every single game I’ve watched him play. I’m delighted to see him get his chance again because he’s gone through so much to get here.”
