After almost five years in the international wilderness, returned to the England team on Friday night when the national team hosted Uruguay at Wembley Stadium.

England boss Thomas Tuchel opted to start Dominic Solanke, with Harry Kane rested for this match, meaning Calvert-Lewin got an opportunity off the bench having been introduced on the 55 minute mark.

The Leeds United striker was unable to get on the scoresheet and will be frustrated by that, having missed a glorious opportunity which he would normally expect to have finished.

It's a point not lost on Tuchel, who has been speaking about Calvert-Lewin's miss. But while Tuchel admits the forward passed up an opportunity to make a statement with a goal, he has suggested he has more than happy with the manner of the performance from the 29-year-old.

With injury from Phil (Foden) we took a double change and it took Dom Calvert-Lewin a little bit to get the press right and to play with the same intensity,” said Tuchel.

“Then Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a big chance for him and he is upset with himself because it was a chance made for him on his head like six metres out so it’s normally a clear goal. He could have made like a statement straight away.

“But we played then through the middle and Dom was always available through the middle and we wanted to play a little bit more through the middle in the second half and he did quite well.

“For me, everyone, they tried to stick to the plan, they tried to put the plan into life and this basically includes everyone and also the two strikers.”

England are back in action on Tuesday evening when facing Japan, with Calvert-Lewin no doubt hoping he gets another chance to impress.
