Newcastle United’s South American scouting network looks to be pretty effective, as the Magpies have been linked with another Brazilian youngster.
After Ross Wilson arrived at Newcastle United, Thomas Federspiel soon followed. Also coming from Nottingham Forest, Federspiel was tasked with using his vast knowledge of Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia to unearth talent for Newcastle.
It seems to be working as it seems every few days Newcastle are being linked with the next big thing in South America.
This time, Radio Pachola, a radio station focused on Brazilian side Gremio, claim that Newcastle are one of a few clubs with an eye on 21-year-old defender Viery.
Radio Pachola actually only names Newcastle in their post, despite claiming interest from other parties.
They state that Newcastle have enquired about Viery and have recently sent scouts to watch the versatile defender, who can play at centre-back and left-back.
“Defender Viery, who has established himself as a starter under Luís Castro, is already catching the eye of the European market.
“Three clubs have made inquiries, including Newcastle, which sent scouts to follow the player. Internally, Grêmio has made it clear that they will only negotiate for values exceeding the €10 million from Alysson’s sale, considered the club’s last major transfer.
“With just 24 professional matches under his belt, the 21-year-old defender has earned his place through speed and consistency, forming a partnership with Gustavo Martins. Viery is contracted until 2029 and has a €50 million release clause for foreign clubs.”
It’s not the first time Newcastle have been mentioned as having an interest in Viery after a report surfaced earlier in March, suggesting we’ve been tracking the South American for some time.
Federspiel clearly has an eye for talent after unearthing Murillo for Nottingham Forest, so if he’s as convinced about Viery, Newcastle could end up with a promising young player on their hands.
A £43.5 million release clause may be seen as a bit steep, so we expect that if Newcastle are serious about pursuing Viery, they’d be hoping to open negotiations with Gremio.
Viery can play either side of central defence and has even covered at left-back. He could be a very useful signing indeed, provided he can adapt to life in the Premier League.
He could be one to keep an eye on in the summer for sure.
