In one area at least, the future looks bright for West Ham United: However much ‘the present’ may be full of anxiety about the remaining seven Premier League games and the jeopardy involved in not overtaking Spurs or Nottingham Forest, the Hammers’ Academy at least seems to be safe and flourishing in the very capable hands of , amongst others, Sporting Director Mark Noble.
Securing promising talent from London rivals as well as developing their own youngsters, West Ham’s coaches are turning out a plethora of quality young talent: In the goal keeping position in particular West Ham appear to have an embarrassment of riches. Youngster Tom Wooster joined the academy from Manchester United in 2025- and of course Mason Terry is on loan at Braintree Town:
Krisztián Hegyi, now 23, has never made it into the senior squad: The Hungarian is on loan at club MTK Budapest, and represents the Hungarian under-21 national team. Chances are, he’ll find himself permanently behind Academy top talent Fin Herrick who looks to have the world at his feet just now. Hegyi still has a year left on his Hammers contract but you’d sense a sale is in the offing if West Ham have a chance to cash in on the young ‘keeper.
Despite ‘that’ dreadful mistake in the National League Cup Final, Herrick has bounced back in the best way possible: On international duty yesterday with England’s U20 squad, Herrick saved a penalty from Italian forward Matteo Lavelli – amongst a number of impressive stops.
Surely it can only be a matter of time before Herrick finds himself working his way up the pecking order with the senior side: At just 20 years old, there seems no ceiling to his potential and unlike Hegyi, he does seem earmarked for great things. Perhaps his ability – like current number one Mads Hermansen – to play as a sweeper-keeper (as is the current vogue )- will see him pushed through towards graduating from Academy football and nailing down a permanent place in the Hammers’ senior squad.
