Sean Dyche dispels 'weird' rumour he keeps hearing about Everton

Some Everton fans are under the impression that Sean Dyche dislikes the Toffees.

The Friedkin Group sacked the man from Kettering back in January 2025 just hours before an FA Cup clash against Peterborough, and considering Everton fans largely moaned about his style of football, it is commonly assumed that the 54-year-old holds some bitterness towards the Toffees.

However – during a new interview on talkSPORT – Sean Dyche moved to quash these rumours after a conversation he had with a fan came to light.

Does Sean Dyche get enough credit for his spell at Everton? 🤔

Sean Dyche says suggestions he dislikes Everton are “mythical”

Dyche – who Tottenham could hire to save them from relegation – told Jonny Owen he has no desire to see Everton struggle, and is proud of his work at Goodison Park.

Initially, Owen said: “I’ll tell a serious (but) funny story. I was out with you once and the Everton score came in and you just sort of gave a little nod. Remember that fella came over and went, I thought you’d want them to lose. And you were like, I used to manage them.”

Dyche replied: “It’s weird. It’s mythical. The thing about, oh, you must be buzzing when they lose. No, not at all. I did two years (of) graft. Real graft. Not just me, loads of good people.

“They had loads of real graft, hard graft. Carrying it, you know, for two years. Why would you want it to fail like that? It’s really weird.”

Of course, there was not much to shout about under Dyche as Everton largely battled against relegation during his time at the helm, although that was also the case under Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard.

The former Burnley boss came in and did what he had to do, giving David Moyes a platform to take the Toffees further – which is now happening with European football firmly in sight.

Would YOU have Lampard back as a replacement for Moyes? 🤔

There is arguably no better English manager outside of the Premier League right now 👀

Dyche may not have built up the same connection with Everton fans as Lampard, Duncan Ferguson and Moyes have, but he clearly feels quite strongly about the misguided notion he wants the Toffees to fail.
