One West Ham star has drawn praise from his national team boss.

One West Ham star has drawn special praise from his national team coach. The Hammers are currently locked in a relegation battle, and there is all to play for, with just one point separating the Iron from the safety spots.

One player who has been key to the Hammers’ revival over recent months is midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who has proven a superb signing, even at an expensive £42million including add-ons.

In fact, Fernandes has been so good that he is likely to earn his first Portugal senior cap during the break, with Roberto Martinez’s men in friendly action against Mexico and USA .

And ahead of those games, which are in preparation for the World Cup, which is being co-hosted by those two countries (plus Canada), Martinez has offered praise for Fernandes.

“Mateus Fernandes is a prime example of excellent youth development in Portugal,” Martinez told O Jogo.. “A Portuguese player who goes on loan to Estoril, has a good season, then goes abroad for millions and is proving important in the most competitive league in the world.

“The door is open for players like him. I loved this training camp; very professional, with new players and continuity. Now, the game will be the key moment to evaluate our team.”
