"I've tried it a couple of times this season!" - Thompson on Olimpico cup final goal

Thompson scored direct from a corner for the only goal of the game, and she told the Daily Echo that she had tried that a few times this season so was pleased to see it drop in at the far post, with just six minutes on the clock.

After her goal, the Cherries held Plymouth firmly at arm's length, and although they turned the screw in the final ten minutes in search of an equaliser, they were unable to break the Bournemouth defence and Helen Bleazard’s side won the cup.

Reflecting on her emotions after the game, Thompson said: “Yeah, [it’s] incredible.

“We won the Plate last season and we were disappointed to go out so early.

“So for us to not just go into the Cup, into the final rounds, but to go all the way and win it, it's like we've come back so much stronger this season. I'm so proud of everyone.”

She said her goal was something she knew she had in her locker: “It's been a while since it's actually gone in, but yeah, I've tried it a couple of times this season and it's hit the crossbar.

“So I think if there was any time for it to go in, this is it.”

Asked how that goal changed the shape of the game, and about their defensive performance, Thompson said: “For us to get on the front foot quite early was really helpful for us.

“Starting off strong is what we wanted to do, and I think we did that defensively. But to get a goal so early on was a big push for us and to then, it was difficult.

“They played really well. They put us under pressure, but it shows how great of a team we are when it comes offensively, defensively.

“We've got the structure, we've got the belief in ourselves, and we were able to hang on for so long.”

The win was made sweeter as it came the weekend after the Cherries had fallen to a 2-1 defeat to Plymouth in the league, with both sides fighting for a top two spot in the table and a chance at promotion to the WSL2.

“We definitely knew we needed to bounce back from last weekend,” Thompson said.

“It was a difficult one to take, but anything can happen still. We've still got that belief in ourselves that we can keep going and push to the end.

“It's going to be a battle between two really great teams, but we back ourselves all the way and we'll be pushing and fighting until the last second of the season.”
