Tino Livramento has admitted it was far from easy parking any Tyne-Wear derby devastation to switch attention to securing his World Cup place.

The Newcastle United full-back was the first player to mention the derby defeat away from club media channels and needed no reminder that the clash against Sunderland was in the must-win category, only for the Magpies to splutter to defeat in the 90th minute to a Brian Brobbey goal.

After the clash with the Wearsiders, Newcastle players did not choose to enter the mixed zone to talk to reporters in the direct aftermath of defeat.

Livramento tried to move on from the 2-1 loss to put in a solid display for England at Wembley in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay. But when asked if it was tricky attempting to recover from the pain of losing to Sunderland, he told reporters: "Of course - it’s not nice losing a derby.

"You want to win every game, and we wanted to win that game more than anything for our fans. Sadly, it just didn’t go that way. "Individually, it’s important to have that fuel you coming away. But it’s a different feeling with your country.

"At your club, it’s very intense and there’s no escaping that. With your country, it’s a different sort of vibe that you have to get used to instantly."

It remains to be seen whether Livramento is sent back to Newcastle after playing 90 minutes against the South American side. England face Japan on Tuesday night with his club colleague Dan Burn likely to step into the defence.

He said: "I haven’t got a clue. I got a text saying I was called up, and that’s all I got, so we’ll have to wait and see."

Livramento may have got in the squad ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold but he warned that Chelsea's Reece James will be another fighting for his spot.

When asked if the place was his to lose, he said: ‘Not necessarily. Reece is an unbelievable player and I hope he comes back as soon as possible

"‘That was the goal (to impress). Anyone called up to this camp it was a chance to impress and a lot of individuals did well today."
