Tottenham are now said to be trailing in a race to land an out of favour Premier League star.

Tottenham are said to be on course to miss out on a goalkeeping target ahead of this summer. Spurs are likely to find themselves in need of a goalkeeper going into next season, with Guglielmo Vicario strongly linked with a move back to Italy.

Spurs don’t yet know which division they will be playing in next season, still fighting for their Premier League lives, but there are already transfer whispers ahead of the summer.

Whether safety is secured or not, Tottenham are likely to lose players, with many players likely to want to represent a more competitive team.

After back-to-back bottom half finishes, Spurs can no longer even pretend to offer that, and they are going to have to prove that they can do it before having any sort of clout in the transfer market.

One player they have been linked with over recent weeks if out of favour Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, who was signed by Pep Guardiola’s men last summer only for Gianluigi Donnarumma to be signed as a starter late in the window.

Trafford has made it clear he wants to play regularly, and as he likely prepares to join England at the World Cup as a back-up keeper, he may push to leave City before next season, even if it is on loan.

But Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke has claimed it is Newcastle who lead the race and not Tottenham. He said on the Transfer Insider podcast: “I think obviously we know Newcastle are long-term admirers of James Trafford. They came very, very close to signing him last summer. It looked like he was going to make that move only for Man City to steal in and lure him back to the Etihad Stadium

“Obviously Trafford is not too happy that he’s been displaced as number one at City, with Gianluigi Donnarumma coming in. Trafford will want to be playing regularly. He’s admitted that he has been shocked by what has happened to him.

“I’m sure Newcastle have continued to keep tabs on Trafford…they’ll be looking at him as a potential new signing. If Trafford wants to leave City in the summer in search of regular first-team football, there’ll be a number of Premier League clubs who’ll be interested in the England goalkeeper.”
