Jose Mourinho 'break clause' in contract can allow him to join Newcastle United

Jose Mourinho took charge of Benfica in September and lost 3-0 to Newcastle United three weeks later.

Jose Mourinho reportedly has a “break clause” in his contract that can allow him to leave Benfica.

The legendary former Chelsea manager only joined Benfica in September. Ironically, one of his first games at As Aguias was against Newcastle United, with Eddie Howe running out as 3-0 winners in the Champions League.

Speculation has ramped up over Howe’s future following the Tyne-Wear derby defeat to Sunderland last weekend. For many Toon fans, appointing Mourinho as his successor would be a fairytale story given the Sir Bobby Robson connection.

Jose Mourinho ‘break’ clause

Portuguese outlet O Jogo has revealed a “break clause” in Mourinho’s deal that allows him to entertain offers elsewhere. In the article, he is also named as a potential Howe replacement.

However, it is also noted that the 63-year-old aims to win the league title at Benfica. Mourinho’s first job as a No.1 in management - which did not work out - was at the Estadio da Luz and clinching the Primeira Liga and delivering a trophy would be his chance of redemption.

Newcastle United stance

The Gazette understands that the shot-callers at St James' Park will not react hastily to the derby defeat. There is an understanding at boardroom level of the mitigating factors behind Newcastle’s underwhelming campaign.

This aligns with the Gazette’s understanding, with Howe - for now - being given the opportunity to set the record straight this summer. With sporting director Ross Wilson and CEO David Hopkinson in place, there is optimism that Newcastle are in a better place to attack the summer window.

Recognition remains of Howe's achievements - including two Champions League qualifications and a Carabao Cup trophy. As long as the atmosphere inside the ground does not turn toxic - and Newcastle’s form avoids nosediving further - their position will not change.

‘A little Magpie’ - Jose Mourinho

Speaking to Sky Sports in 2020, Mourinho admitted to feeling a "connection" with Newcastle due to Sir Bobby. The Portuguese famously worked as an interpreter - and de facto coach - for the Toon legend at Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona.

“It's a club I feel connection with because of Mr Robson, it's a simple as that,” Mourinho said. “He had a huge passion for Newcastle and his area, Durham. He had it in his heart. So, through him I have become a little Magpie!”
