Newcastle United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is one of eight players to have left the England camp ahead of Tuesday night's friendly with Japan.

Thomas Tuchel made the decision to call up 35 players for the two matches in the current international break, but confirmed some would only take part in one matchday squad.

Ramsdale, who is on loan at United from Southampton, was included in the initial group, but will now return to Tyneside following the 1-1 draw with Uruguay on Friday night.

Newcastle stars Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon are expected to play some part against Japan, and will join United team-mates Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes in the 27-man squad, with the trio all featuring against Uruguay.

Fikayo Tomori and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have also departed the group, along with Man City defender John Stones, who picked up an injury in Friday's game.

Arsenal trio Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke will also leave the squad, while Adam Wharton will return to Crystal Palace after also picking up a slight injury concern.

The match against Japan is one of the final chances players will have to impress Tuchel before he submits his 30-man squad for the World Cup.

The deadline is May 30, with England having lined up friendlies with Costa Rica and New Zealand before their World Cup campaign starts against Croatia on June 17.

Manchester United's Harry Maguire could miss out on a place on the plane, despite return to the squad this week. Tuchel acknowledged the Manchester United defender's strengths, but said that he remains behind Burn, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones and the injured Trevoh Chalobah in the pecking order.

"I got exactly what I thought, solid, solid central defender play," he said. "That's what he does. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and in the weapon for set-pieces.

"I haven't changed my mind but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile.

"I see Ezri Konsa ahead, I see Marc Guehi ahead. It's no secret. I see Trevor Chalobah on the level of mobility was slightly ahead of him.

"Also John Stones, but he had injuries, so he needed to come to camp.

"I needed to meet him in person to see how he acts within the group. It will be interesting now to see how he acts within the group. He will stay with us.

"Like I said, he has an asset, of course, that he can also be super important in a tournament, in knockout football, in defending a lead and chasing a game with crosses and long throw-ins and set-pieces."
