Anthony Gordon has caused a stir on social media with his verdict on Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer. Gordon was speaking to DAZN when he was asked to rank several England stars, past and present, against each other.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed an impressive season for Newcastle this term, scoring 17 goals across all competitions, including six in the Premier League.
[Gordon](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/anthony gordon) is part of the England squad that was selected by head coach Thomas Tuchel for the final international break of the season.
In an interview with DAZN, Gordon was asked to rank several England stars against one another, with Shearer included.
Gordon was asked to choose between Shearer and Arsenal star Bukayo Saka, who he is alongside in the England squad during the current international break.
Gordon briefly thought about his answer before naming Saka as his pick. This has led to several responses on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Doesn’t do himself any favours, some Newcastle fans will not like this,” one fan wrote. While another said, “Did he just pick Saka lol.”
Another fan stated, “Don't blame him after Shearer's recent comments about him before the Barca game,” while another pondered the question, “Who in the world of sport would pick Saka ahead of Shearer?”

Gordon’s remarks come a few weeks after the Newcastle star responded to comments made by Shearer after the forward missed the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final with Barcelona through illness.
"Maybe I'm old school but if you're fit enough to train in the morning, and I know he doesn't feel well, but this is Barcelona at Newcastle for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League," Shearer said at the time.
“It would take something extraordinary to keep myself out of this game tonight.”
Gordon went on to respond to the comments made by Shearer, which the Newcastle star labelled as “nonsense”.
“What the media guy told me was being said was complete and utter stupidity," Gordon said.
“I was in bed for three days, missed training, and turned up on the day of the game ready to start – I thought I was starting.
“When I got to the stadium, the manager told me I wasn’t playing, which you can imagine I didn’t like very much, but that’s his decision and the team played great. Saying I didn’t want to play in the biggest game of my career is absolute nonsense.”
In response, Shearer was then asked about Gordon’s reaction to his comments, with the Newcastle star standing by his initial remarks.
"I love it," Shearer said during an episode of The Rest is Football podcast earlier this month.
"That's fine. You always get the right to reply as a player. I wouldn't change anything I said the other night against Barcelona. [You] wouldn't have kept me out with an illness for a game. I know he said it was the manager's decision."
