It was a day full of special moments and emotional scenes as the legends of Liverpool’s past faced off against Borussia Dortmund legends.
Jurgen Klopp lit up the touchline alongside Kenny Dalglish as he helped manage Liverpool legends.
Sights we became accustomed to seeing were resumed as Jurgen Klopp was seen back in Liverpool gear, riling up the Kop with his passionate fist bumps.
Speaking to The Redmen TV after the game, Dirk Kuyt explained how everyone showed just how much Jurgen Klopp was loved at the club yesterday.
Martin Skrtel and Sami Hyppia started in defence, with Thiago Alcantara and Steven Gerrard lining up in midfield and Ryan Babel leading the attack.
Thiago Alcantara announced his retirement from professional football in July 2024 at the age of just 33.
After departing Liverpool as a free agent, he decided to hang up his boots after being plagued with persistent injuries throughout his time on Merseyside.
But the Spaniard quickly reminded the Anfield faithful of why he was so loved at the club during the Legends clash as he was at the heart of everything good for the home side.
It took him just six minutes to open the scoring, as he latched on to a Steven Gerrard through-ball to score from a tight angle.
Showing that he still possesses immense quality, he revealed whilst speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the game what he said to Steven Gerrard after converting into the Anfield net.
Joking to the Liverpool legend during the celebrations, Thiago said: “When I scored, Stevie came and I told him it was the first sprinting I did since I arrived in Liverpool!”
“In that moment we just react, we are comfortable in the box. It’s nice to score.”
Whilst Thiago’s light joke was a playful one, it reinforced why he was so adored during his time at the club due to his mix of humour and class.
Despite his multiple injury setbacks, his quality was never in doubt as he did produce many magical displays in a Liverpool shirt.
As well as admitting to his joke with Steven Gerrard, he reflected on the privilege of playing with him, saying: “It’s amazing. Two things got together – that is a full Anfield and playing with this legend [Gerrard]. It was an unbelievable moment, and I will keep it with me for sure.”
Steven Gerrard is a former player of such stature that he is immensely respected even within a dressing room full of other great former players.
The game pulled in a record attendance for a Legends match at Anfield with 60,582 and all proceeds from the game went to supporting the work of LFC Foundation, as well as beneficiaries such as Forever Reds.
