How Scotland's media reacted to Everton's Nathan Patterson's display vs Japan

Nathan Patterson started for Scotland in their 1-0 defeat to Japan on Saturday.

The Everton right-back picked up his 24th cap for Scotland in what was his first start since March 2024.

Nathan Patterson played 81 minutes at Hampden Park before being taken off for Anthony Ralston, with Japan netting the winner minutes later.

That said, we’ve taken a look at how the national media reacted to Patterson’s performance.

Patterson appeared to have a pretty steady game, although the consensus was he seemed to be a little rusty, which is to be expected given his limited game time under David Moyes.

Here’s what the Daily Record had to say.

6/10 – “Back in the fold for Scotland after two years away and did OK against the likes of Maeda and Mitoma. Signs of ring-rust and looks like a player who needs more minutes.”

The Scotsman added.

5/10 – “Made his first start for Scotland in two years and kept Daizen Maeda quiet. Had one hairy moment early on when he slipped. Played a little too safe going forward, with the crowd often urging him to drive at the Japan defence.”

Edinburgh News stated.

6/10 – “Making his first international start since March 2024, the Everton defender linked up well with McGinn down the right flank. Offensively not at his best. Room for improvement.”

Sofascore gave Patterson a very respectable 7.1 match rating, making him the second-highest rated Scottish player behind goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

81 minutes

57 touches

72% pass accuracy

6 recoveries

2 ground duels won

2 clearances

1 interception

1 key pass

Patterson returns to action on Tuesday evening at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, funnily enough.

Scotland take on the Ivory Coast in a friendly match at Everton’s 52,000-seater, so the right-back will certainly be hopeful of starting at his club’s home ground.
