Liverpool's difference in points from this time last year highlights how badly things have gone wrong

This time last year, Liverpool were heading into the final stretch of the season almost guaranteed to lift the Premier League title.

Having been utterly dominant under Arne Slot, the Reds sat 11 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table with just seven matches left to play.

Fast forward 12 months, and things could hardly be more different for Liverpool and Slot, with a whopping 24-point drop from year to year.

How many points do you think Liverpool will finish with this season?

It's going to be a LOT less than last year 😬

Eight defeats set Liverpool back heavily

Boasting a tally of 73 points by matchday 31 in the 2024/25 Premier League season, Liverpool would still be three points clear of Arsenal if you translate their tally across to the current campaign.

While the procession was already beginning one year ago, though, Liverpool now face a huge fight to get into next season’s Champions League.

The reason for that is that the Reds have lost eight more games from this stage last year.

Rather neatly, Liverpool have drawn seven of their first 31 matches in the last two Premier League campaigns, meaning the difference is easy to see. It has come in the defeats.

Amazingly, Brighton handed Liverpool their 10th loss of the league season last Saturday, a whole eight more – or 24 points – than at this stage last season.

With 22 wins, seven draws and two defeats, Liverpool had already beaten the highest possible total Slot’s team can reach this time around.

There are 21 points left to play for in 25/26, meaning the Reds can still theoretically win the title, but will lose that ability with their next draw or defeat.

70 is the maximum for Liverpool this season, and that now has to be the aim. The way things have been going recently, though, it feels highly probable that they’ll struggle to even reach the 60 point mark.
